Is It Truly Possible to be Sixty & Solar?

Are you one of those who carry the impression that anyone who is sixty and beyond is now over the proverbial hill of life and has nothing more to look forward to? All you need to do is access the Internet or flip through a lifestyle magazine to realize how wrong you have been - at sixty not only is it possible to be solar but also energetic to the point of putting even an adolescent to shame. The five personalities that I have chosen to highlight in this website are nothing short of being stellar examples of how important it is to be determined and tenacious in your outlook. Like everyone else, they have also faced numerous ups and downs in life but their credibility lies in having overcome the difficulties and having unrelenting faith in themselves and their abilities.

So does this formula work for everyone? True though it is that there is no one-solution-fits-all to life's problems, there are some general guidelines which on being applied can actually make a difference to the ageing process. While it is but natural for everyone to grow old, an aspect that can be tweaked a bit pertains to growing old with grace and confidence so that you are still as enthusiastic about what life has to offer round the next corner as though you were a teenager. And the best part about feeling solar at sixty does not have anything to do with spending huge amounts of money at beauty salons or on cosmetic surgery but just bringing about certain lifestyle changes and observing them as much as possible.

Stay Fit

When you look at Harrison Ford, Pierce Brosnan or Juanita Vanoy, you cannot but help notice how fit they are despite having crossed the hill of sixty years. Not only should this be motivation enough for you to remain in shape but also realize that doing so keeps at bay several health issues which tend to aggravate as you grow older. 

It is extremely important to maintain a moderate level of activity because it would serve to keep your weight in check and also strengthen your bones and muscles, thus reducing the risk of osteoporosis. An added advantage is that of reduced risk of high cholesterol and heart stroke.

Stick to a Balanced Diet

While this might hold true throughout your tenure on Planet Earth, it is particularly applicable once you have celebrated your sixtieth birthday. Research has proved that as you grow older, your metabolism slows down considerably and this in turn implies that your body will take double the amount of time to process food than it used to take when you were younger. From this it derives that you need to be careful about what you eat because it would have a direct impact on your health and overall well being. So while a balanced diet is likely to meet your body's nutritional requirements and ensure that you remain energetic throughout the day, eating junk will only result in untimely aches and pains that would interfere with your daily functioning. 

Another important tip is to reduce your salt intake. As rightly pointed out by Democritus - 'Throw moderation to the winds, and the greatest pleasures bring the greatest pains.' Among all the food groups, this is more applicable to salt because excess intake of salt has been proven to cause a plethora of health problems like high blood pressure, hypertension, kidney malfunction and so on. 

Think Positively

Positive thinking has been known to cure even the most hopeless of cases and while it cannot be taken as a substitute for medicines, it definitely acts as a catalyst that speeds up recovery and propels you towards a better life. As you grow older, it is inevitable to feel overwhelmed and stressed out by life's situations and it is easy to succumb to pressures. Once you get into the spiral of thoughts, it is just a matter of time before you get pulled deeper into it and it becomes a habit to adopt a negative perspective on any given situation. As this habit takes root within you, outwardly it is manifested in form of lines, wrinkles, a grumpy mood and a stressed attitude.   

But does it necessarily have to be this way? Unless you relish sinking into an abyss of negativity, any time is the best time to direct your thoughts in the positive direction and in the process preserve yourself physically, mentally and emotionally. Rather than being over the hill at sixty, you would soon be treating it as a new adolescent phase of your life, one wherein you are experienced, sure of yourself and ready to enjoy life to the fullest.
